Vietnam

How did experiencing Vietnam change the country? How is this relevant today?

  1. Experiencing Vietnam taught people to further mistrust the government and their own culture. As discussed on Omar’s blog, the media had attempted to hide much of the truth from its viewers and give a false sense of hope that things were actually progressing well. However, the truth of the war was that it was only causing tons of suffering for no legitimate reason and the United States was overstepping its boundaries of power. In realizing this, the people’s growing realization that their culture was incredibly flawed was enforced. Vietnam provided a strengthening of the belief that change was essential and that the United State’s culture was not tolerable. It forced them to take a step back and realize the limits it should set on its own power and the huge impact that a bad decision can make on the world. This realization is still one that serves as an essential lesson to today’s world. Vietnam taught us that we should be more careful in considering what actions we should take as in involving ourselves in other countries affairs, a debate central to the conflict in Iraq.
