Youth

How did the events of the sixties affect college campuses? What were the roles of music and appearance in the decade and how do they affect us today?

  1. Appearances functioned as a way to make a statement about your personal beliefs. For example, in the women’s movement “radical” females initially wore tight jeans and mini-skirts etc. as symbols that they refused to conform to the more conservative dress that was expected from them. They were fighting against society. However, as feminism took flight the women changed their apparel to unisex clothing, shaved their heads, and some even refused to shave. These women decided that they were dressing in a way which proved they refused to manipulate their appearance to please men. Also, students grew their hair long and the “freaks” neglected hygiene in order to shock the public. In a time where so much political activity was going on, your appearance represented your political views.
